Utility Facility Shared Practice Meeting

This month’s utility facilities group shared practice discussion was on the application of benchmarking results. Many facility teams collect benchmarking data on cost, maintenance, energy, staffing, service levels, and facility condition. A key question is how those results are actually used.
Although helpful as a general reference, benchmarking results can be valuable when they are used to support a real decision: explaining performance to leadership, defending a budget request, setting improvement priorities, evaluating service levels, or developing a practical action plan.
This topic matters now because facility leaders are being asked to defend budgets, manage aging assets, support reliability and resilience, control operating costs, and document the rationale for capital and operating decisions. And for utility facilities, context matters. A storm-response facility, network control center, headquarters, warehouse, or crew headquarters may have very different service expectations, security requirements, operating hours, and risk exposure.
