This Month’s Shared Practice Meeting

Using Automation Technology for Museum Climate Control and Energy Management
Shared Practice Meeting (One-hour Zoom call)
April 28, 2026:12:00 pm EDT / 8:00 am PDT / 4:00 pm CET

Traditional climate control in cultural institutions maintains conditions at constant levels, but at a high energy cost. This session presents how research at Eindhoven University of Technology shows that dynamic climate control enables museums and archives to reduce energy use while improving preventive conservation. Real-world case studies from leading museums show energy savings of 30–70% in air handling alongside enhanced climate performance.

The barrier to moving away from the ‘ideal’ 70˚C / 50% RH isn’t just aged hardware, but also confidence in results and the complexity of implementation. In this session, Rick Kramer (CEO, Dyseco) presents two case studies that illustrate the potential shift to flexible climate control that balances collection preservation and energy efficiency.

Please take a few minutes to share your thoughts on our shared practice survey on this topic as a starting point for the discussion.
