Total Cost of Occupancy-Ownership

Utility Facility Shared Practice Meeting

  • March 24, 2026

Utilities are all facing cost pressure.  Understanding the Total Cost of Occupancy/Ownership (TCO) of your occupied properties provides the best context for discussion of how to manage facility-related costs.

What is the full cost to the organization of providing and operating the occupied physical properties (owned or leased) used to support business operations. How important is it to understand this vs. just costs being actively managed?

Many organizations track pieces of the picture due to different perspectives between finance (accounting) and facilities (management) and costs spread among different budgets. This month’s discussion was on the approaches used by participants (from “basic OPEX visibility” to lifecycle models), and whether TCO adds value versus administrative burden.
